Levein pours water on Flood talk

Dundee United manager Craig Levein quashed suggestions he is looking to bring Willo Flood back from Celtic on a loan deal.

The Irishman moved from Tannadice to Parkhead in January but has failed to pin down a first-team place, making just two starts for the Hoops and five appearances in total.

Reports claimed Levein was interested in taking the midfielder back to Tayside.

However, the United boss, after watching his side beat Alloa Athletic 2-0 in the Co-operative Insurance Cup second round at Recreation Park, was unequivocal in his rebuttal of the Flood speculation.

"No, there is nothing in it," he said. "We would need a whip-round to get anybody in.

"You know the story about Setanta and our budget is shot so, no."

First-half goals from Andis Shala and David Goodwillie saw the Tannadice men safely past the Irn-Bru Second Division side.

Levein was pleased his side came through a potentially tricky tie relatively unscathed.

He added: "I was happy to get through without any injuries and happy with a lot of the performances.

"With the artificial pitch, we could have slipped up but we were pretty focused for the whole match.

"It was really tight early on and we didn't look like we were going to open them up but there was good quality from Craig Conway's corner and Andis gets us in front and the game changes after that.

"Goals alter people's mind-sets and it relaxed us a bit."

Alloa boss Allan Maitland had no complaints about the result, saying: "I thought in the first half in particular United's attitude was excellent.

"They were sharper and we were chasing the game and when you do that there is likely to be lapses in concentration and I thought both goals were soft, especially the second one.

"But great credit to them. I thought we played better in the second half but even allowing for that we didn't do enough to threaten them.

"They are a good side but we can hold our heads up high."
