Steaua Bucharest scored twice late in the game to end the faint hopes St Patrick's had of turning around their Europa League play-off as they won 2-1 on the night and 5-1 on aggregate.
St Pat's went in front at the RDS Arena when Garreth O'Connor scored in the 49th minute after good work from Declan O`Brien, but after a 3-0 defeat in Romania more goals were required.
Two more arrived but both went to Steaua.
Substitute Banel Nicolita took advantage of a poor backpass from Ryan Guy to slam a vicious shot into the top corner for an 80th-minute equaliser and Razvan Ochirosii netted a winner in the 89th minute from Romeo Surdu`s pass.
