Van Gaal remains upbeat

Bayern Munich boss Louis van Gaal still believes his side can reach the knockout stage of the Champions League despite their 2-0 defeat at home to Bordeaux on Tuesday night.

The defeat was Bayern's second in four games in Group A and left them four points adrift of second-placed Juventus. The Germans now need to win their remaining two matches at home to Maccabi Haifa and away to Juventus to have any realistic chance of progressing.

"That was a long way from our best performance, but you have to be at your best in the Champions League," Van Gaal told the club's official website.

"We kept our shape, we let them have very few chances and we made openings of our own, but we failed to score, and that's what really matters. And it's the little things that settle a game like that. A shot hits the post, a handball, a free-kick. We battled away but we've come up short.

"We're not out yet. We still have a small chance, but we're dependent on Bordeaux."

The French side have a two-point lead at the top of the group and are at home to Juve in their next game.

Midfielder Mark van Bommel also knows their hopes of progression are still alive.

He said: "It's not over yet because there are still two games to play. If we win them, we'll be up to 10 points. But it's going to be tough."
