Another Wag used a shoebox to store all the love letters and telephone numbers of unknown women she found in her husband's pockets when he got home from pubs and nightclubs.

Ms Kervin told The New Paper she started researching the Wags' lives after the 2006 World Cup.

She said: "At that time, the photographs we got over here (in the UK) mostly showed the Wags going out every night, getting drunk, spending lots of money.

We hardly saw much football because most of the pictures were about the Wags.

"When the football teams returned home after the World Cup, the Wags were offered book deals. I thought that was ridiculous."

Not long after the World Cup ended, a friend introduced Ms Kervin to one of the Wags and she soon started talking to them.

She even went out with some of them.

Ms Kervin said all this was done on the condition that she never reveal the Wags' real names in her books or articles.

She learnt that their lives were not all a bed of roses.

Ms Kervin said: "The footballer could be playing one moment at Liverpool, and then suddenly be transferred to Arsenal (football club) in London, at the other end of the country.

"When they move there with their families, they are surrounded by fans, coaches, team staff, and everyone else connected with the club.

"But their wives and girlfriends are nobodies, and while their husbands and boyfriends are away, they are cooped up in their house in the country. Many of the Wags are quite young, so they find it hard to make friends."

Not all Wags are like Victoria Beckham and Cheryl Cole, well-known personalities before they met their husbands.

Ms Kervin said many of the Wags she met were just in school or working as hairdressers or in other simple jobs when they met their future boyfriends or husbands.

She said: "They like the new lifestyle, but knowing their husbands are the target of many young women makes many of these Wags very insecure."
