Alexander was earmarked for LMA role

LMA chief executive Richard Bevan has revealed he had intended on inviting Keith Alexander to join the organisation's board before his sad passing.

Macclesfield boss Alexander, who suffered a brain aneurysm in November 2003, died at the age of 53 after arriving home on Tuesday night from the club's League Two match at Notts County.

Bevan told Press Association Sport: "A position became available for another member to join the board of the LMA and, at a recent LMA board meeting, it was felt that Keith would be the outstanding person to ask. But sadly I didn't get chance to do that."

When asked why Alexander had been the leading contender, Bevan added: "A number of reasons. He was a very active member, he was also involved in projects the LMA were promoting, particularly community work and projects we were developing with the Prince's Trust.

"He was an excellent communicator. Our fellow members looked up to him. He had great experience as a manager and also he was, for a short while, director of football at Bury, so he understood that approach as well to the game.

"He had great experience with many clubs on doing them low budget and was also an excellent mentor, so I think all of those reasons are part of why the board were keen to see him join."

The club have opened a book of condolence in Alexander's memory, both in The Moss Rose's McIlroy Suite and online at their official website, www.mtfc.co.uk.

The news came as a huge shock to Silkmen chairman Mike Rance, who added: "We're all absolutely devastated.

"I spoke to Keith on Tuesday night at about 11.15pm after our game at Notts County and he was in good spirits because, although we lost, we had given a team chasing promotion a good game.

"We were chatting about an FA hearing after he had a row with a referee at Bournemouth, which just shows how passionate he was about the game. It was perhaps fitting that the last conversation we had was about football."
