Macclesfield match to go ahead

Posted Thursday, March 04, 2010 by PA

Macclesfield assistant boss Gary Simpson has confirmed this weekend`s Coca-Cola League Two match at Hereford will go ahead as scheduled following the death of manager Keith Alexander.

Silkmen boss Alexander died just hours after the club`s match at Notts County on Tuesday, raising the possibility of Saturday`s game being postponed, but - following discussions with Alexander`s family, Macclesfield`s players and Hereford officials - the Edgar Street clash will go ahead.

Simpson said: "It's exactly what the gaffer would have wanted."

He added: "Keith just loved the game and the last thing he would have wanted was to cause any fuss.

"He would have expected us to go Hereford and put on a show as if it was any other game.

"Of course it is going to be tough and emotional day. And I suspect a few tears will be shed.

"But having spoken to his son Matt, he was adamant that his dad would have wanted the game to go ahead and it is only right that we respect his family's wishes."
