JOHANNESBURG (AP)—South Africa’s rugby union has urged the national football team to “make the country proud” at the World Cup, saying the world champion Springboks will be in the crowd to support the hosts.
The South African Rugby Union held a dinner for the South African Football Association on Tuesday, the eve of the 50-day countdown to the tournament.
SARU president Oregan Hoskins said “Rugby is backing Bafana Bafana and SAFA all the way.”
Hoskins said the Springboks, who won rugby’s World Cup in 2007, would be at the Group A game between South Africa and Uruguay in Pretoria on June 16.
Hoskins said “This is a massive sporting event in terms of soccer, but it is arguably even bigger in terms of the life of South Africa.”
