SFA backs ref after he overturned Celtic penalty

GLASGOW, Scotland (AP)—The Scottish Football Association has ruled that a referee was correct to overturn a penalty decision on the advice of a linesman who has since quit.
The SFA says that referee Dougie McDonald changed his mind on the award of a penalty to Celtic in an Oct. 17 Scottish Premier League match against Dundee United because “he immediately realized that he may have made an error.”
Linesman Steven Craven told McDonald he did not think it was a penalty and the referee reversed his decision.
Craven resigned after he and his family were abused for his part in the incident but SFA chief executive Stewart Regan says “it was important to thoroughly investigate the matter.”
