MILAN (AP)—Filippo Inzaghi’s season is likely over, with the AC Milan striker requiring surgery to repair ligament damage in his left knee.
The 37-year-old forward was injured after coming on in the second half of Milan’s 3-1 win over Palermo on Wednesday.
An operation is expected to be scheduled over the next two days and Inzaghi was quick to send out a message to his fans that this doesn’t necessarily mark the end of his career.
“I don’t give up,” he said. “I’m going to do everything I can—believe me—to avoid this being the end.”
The injury, which occurred in a challenge with Palermo defender Cesare Bovo, came exactly a week after what Inzaghi called the best night of his career, having come off the bench to score two goals in the 2-2 draw with Real Madrid.
Inzaghi has scored two goals in Serie A this season and three in the Champions League to become the all-time leading scorer in Europe with 70 career goals. In 289 matches overall with Milan, he has scored 125 goals, one more than former Milan star Marco van Basten.
