BERLIN (AFP) - German second-division side Augsburg are now virtually assured of promotion to the Bundesliga for the first time in their history following their 2-1 home victory over FSV Frankfurt on Sunday.
With one week left of the season, Augsburg are set to finish as second division runners-up behind champions Hertha Berlin, who had their promotion confirmed last week.
Bavarian side Augsburg, from 50km east of Munich, are now three points ahead of third-placed Bochum with a vastly superior goal difference.
Augsburg have been in the second division since 2006 and missed out on promotion last season when they lost the play-off to Nuremberg having finished third in the second tier.
Bundesliga bottom side St Pauli had their relegation confirmed on Saturday and they will be joined by either Eintracht Frankfurt, 2009 champions VfL Wolfsburg or Borussia Moenchengladbach.
The side which finishes third from bottom in the Bundesliga faces a play-off against the side third from top of the table in the second division at the end of May.
