Delneri accepts Juve's Euro quest over

Juventus coach Luigi Delneri said his team's hopes of playing in Europe next season are over after they lost 1-0 at Parma on Sunday.

That left them in seventh place, three points behind Roma in sixth and the last European qualification place.

Although they have the better head-to-head record, they need Roma to lose at home to relegated Sampdoria and to beat Napoli next week to snatch a place in the Europa League.

It means they look set to finish seventh for the second season in a row, only this time without even the consolation of European football to come.

Last season was Juve's worst in Serie A with a record 15 defeats and 56 goals conceded.

They have done slightly better this time in that they have earned more points than 12 months ago and will not threaten either of those unwanted records.

"We're out of Europe but I don't think it's right to talk about quitting and in fact, absolutely, I won't," said Delneri.

"I'm bound (to a contract) and I will remain bound. I'll do my job to the best of my abilities and the club will decide what they must do.

"Of course the results haven't been positive but there are great difficulties when you make great changes and that's what's happened to Juve."

Centre-back Giorgio Chiellini complained that the team hadn't played with the right attitude against Parma, as has happened so many times this season.

"We didn't have the right approach to the game which for me is very disappointing," he said.

"Many times we haven't managed to switch on at 3pm (the Sunday kick-off time).

"We still thought we could save our season. Everyone mocks the Europa League but it's an important competition.

"You can't get into the Champions League in one leap, you need to do so in steps."
