Jose Mourinho revels in adversity

Real Madrid manager, Jose Mourinho, has revealed that he enjoys facing ‘difficult situations.’ The Portuguese claims that the pressures inherent with coaching a high-profile club is what keeps him motivated.

Mourinho has not had an easy ride during his time with Spanish giants, Real Madrid. The self-proclaimed ‘Special One’ has had to see his team come out second best to Barcelona in both La Liga and UEFA Champions League. Though he guided Madrid to the Copa del Rey this season, he has been facing criticism from all sides for the way in which he set up his team against the Catalans.

The Real Madrid team showed a sense of adventure and a hunger for goals against the lesser teams of the La Liga, but whenever they squared up against Barcelona, Jose Mourinho opted for an overly defensive style of play.

His questionable tactics are not the only reason he has been facing criticism from all sides. After Real Madrid’s defeat to Barcelona in the Champions League semi-final, the outspoken Portuguese once again talked himself into a corner.

Mourinho accused UEFA of favouring the Catalans, something that earned him a five match touchline ban from European competition.

But in spite of all his problems, the under-fire manager remains as confident as when he first emerged on the world stage as Porto manager. Mourinho is unfazed by the negativity around him, claiming that he revels in pressure.

Speaking on the matter, he said, “There are many, difficult situations involving me with rival coaches, press and it is hard to point out one particular situation. I love the difficult situations. I enjoy the challenge of facing difficult situations. There is no fun in life if there were no difficult situations, and difficult situations make the coaching job interesting.”

Mourinho revealed that the reason he has been changing clubs so rapidly in the past few years is to take on new challenges in different leagues. He added, “If there was no fun and challenges in coaching, we wouldn’t have changed clubs, changed cultures and changed countries to take up the coaching job. I love every moment of it.”

Real Madrid finished the 2010/11 La Liga campaign in second place and will look to break Barca’s dominance when the league commences in August this year.
