PASADENA, Calif. - Just over a week ago, Freddy Adu wasn't even dressing for the United States national team. Now, it's looking like he's secured a starting spot.
After playing well during his second-half stint off the bench against Panama in the semifinals, the 22-year-old midfielder started and played 86 minutes in the USA's 4-2 loss to Mexico in the Gold Cup final Saturday night at the Rose Bowl.
"I think he's done well since he came into camp," said star midfielder Landon Donovan, who also started for the Stars and Stripes. "If you know one thing about him it's that he's not going to be overwhelmed by the occasion."
Adu, who was labeled by many a bust after once being considered the future of U.S. soccer, assisted Michael Bradley's goal in the eighth minute with a nicely placed corner kick.
"He tired a little bit at the end, but I think he helped us," Donovan added.
