Gomez: Resigned despite a public apology over bar incident
The Colombian football federation have confirmed that head coach Hernan Dario Gomez has resigned from his post.
The 55-year-old became embroiled in controversy at the weekend when he allegedly punched a woman in a Bogotá bar after she had criticised his management of the national team.
Gomez released a public apology for the incident on Monday, but the pressure had continued to grow on the former Ecuador manager, who was in his second spell as coach of the Colombian national team.
A statement on the Federacion Colombiana de Futbol website released on Tuesday confirmed that Gomez had decided to resign.
"After deep personal reflection, looking for the best interests of the country, the Colombian national team, the federation and the sponsors and accepting the consequences of his acts, Hernan Dario Gomez Jaramillo presented his resignation as coach of the national team," the statement read.
"The Colombian federation wishes to reiterate and be emphatic that it deplores and rejects any act of violence by officials, players or coaches."
A board meeting is to be held in the next 10 days to decide on a replacement.
