Petr Cech: Concussion scare brought back memories of horror injury
HELL TO PAY ... Cech is left KO'd after his clash with Stephen Hunt

"Even on the morning of the Swansea game, we weren't sure if I'd be able to play.

"We only decided after the warm-up. If I felt any effects, I wasn't going to play. But I was fine."

Cech still bears the mental and physical scars of that near-death experience five years ago, when he was caught by the knee of Reading winger Hunt and ruled out for three months.

Medical experts have warned Cech that the bones in his skull are not as thick as they should be because he was born one of a set of triplets.

And he admits the constant anxiety is even worse for his wife Martina.

He added: "Fortunately, my wife was looking after the kids on Wednesday night and wasn't at the game.

"She told me she was glad she didn't see the injury, as every time something like that happens it reminds her of 2006.

"Yet when I first played again after the injury at Reading, I promised that, if I need to put my head somewhere, I will do it. It's a part of the game. The day I feel the fear of putting my head into the middle of some battle or scrum, then I will stop. But so far I haven't felt that.

"I am not naïve enough or stupid enough to do things that I shouldn't.

"And it would have been stupid for me to play on Saturday if I was not right.

"If you are not right you can make a mistake that will cost your team-mates a game.

"So I have full awareness of what is at stake and I decided I was fine to play at the weekend.

"There is nothing more to say. This is football and things like this can happen. I'm just unfortunate that I always get a nice knock with a nice scar!"

Meanwhile Brighton boss Gus Poyet has joined those backing axed Frank Lampard to show new boss Andre Villas-Boas he still has a key part to play in Chelsea's future.

Lampard was dropped from the Blues' starting line-up for the first time in eight years for the 4-1 win over Swansea.

But former team-mate Poyet insisted: "Frank is going to react in the best way by working professionally to show he can still be an important player for Chelsea.

"He is a professional, a fantastic lad and loves playing for Chelsea. I am sure Frank will bounce back and be an important part of their season."
