Neville: 'Three years ago Rodwell's tackle wouldn't have been a foul!'

Phil Neville has leapt to the defence of Everton youngster Jack Rodwell following his red card in the Merseyside derby defeat to Liverpool.
England Under-21 international Rodwell was given his marching orders during the first-half against Liverpool when the score was 0-0, leaving David Moyes’ side to play 65 minutes with ten men.
But Everton captain Neville has insisted Rodwell is not to blame for his side’s defeat and called for the FA to reverse the decision, claiming that the tackle in question wouldn’t have even been a foul three years ago.
He said: “Jack feels as if he has cost us the game and we have said to him ‘you have not cost us the game at all’. He’s a midfielder.
“Three years ago that wouldn’t have even been a foul. I do have sympathy for the referees, they do have an unbelievably tough job but for someone like Jack who is now beginning to show the potential and form which we know he has got, his season is interrupted.
“He is massively disappointed and I suppose the big thing now is that hopefully that card will be rescinded and we can put this to bed.”
