Ajax coach Frank de Boer believes his side have taken a big step toward qualifying for the knock-out stages of the Champions League by beating Dinamo Zagreb 2-0 on Tuesday evening.
"We have taken a big step in the right direction, although obviously we also want to be in the Champions League after winter," De Boer was quoted as saying on the official UEFA website.
Second half goals from Derk Boerrigter and Christian Eriksen helped the Eredivisie champions to the full three points, and De Boer feels the Amsterdam giants are on the right path.
"I am very happy as we dominated most of the time. They started pretty well and had two good chances to score at the beginning.
He added, "After that we got a grip on the game and at certain points we had 66 per cent of possession. We also created some chances in the first half but failed to take them. It was also important to not concede a goal."
Ajax sits second in Group D with four points from three games, while Dinamo Zagreb are bottom, with zero points. Real Madrid top the section with a 100 per cent record, while Olympique Lyonnais are third.
