ROBERTO MANCINI is to be offered a new £22million four-year deal by Manchester City.

It will make him the Premier League's joint highest-paid boss.

The Italian's contract will take his £3.5m-a-year salary to £5.5m and put him alongside rival Alex Ferguson at Manchester United at the top of the pay league.

The mega deal is a reward for an amazing 22 months at the City helm.

In that time he has guided the club to their first trophy in 35 years with last season's FA Cup.

Mancini has also taken the club into the Champions League and to the top of the Premier League, which they currently lead by five points.

Last weekend he was the architect of one of the greatest results in the club's history when they beat arch-rivals United 6-1 in the derby at Old Trafford.

Mancini, 46, has had plenty of money to spend but he has spent it well in assembling a squad that is now regarded amongst the very best in Europe.

The club's owner Sheikh Mansour and chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak now want to ensure they tie his services down for another four years.

Mancini signed a 3½-year contract when he came to the club in December 2009. That has just over 18 months left to run.

There is plenty of interest in Mancini — not least back in Italy at Juventus, the club he supported as a boy.

They have already tried to get him once since he came to England.

The Italian national team job would also appeal to him and that could come up after next summer's Euro 2012 finals.

City are keen to ensure he is not tempted to go anywhere else and negotiations on a fresh contract are due to take place in the New Year.
