Danny Welbeck set for massive new deal with Man Utd

DANNY WELBECK handed Manchester United a big Euro boost last night by signalling his intention to sign a new five-year contract.

England striker Welbeck, 20, will sit down with United officials in the next month to rubberstamp a £45,000-a-week deal.

It is his reward for the outstanding strides he has made since returning to Old Trafford this season.

Welbeck, who spent last term on loan at Sunderland, has 18 months left on his existing deal and currently earns £15,000 a week before bonuses.

SunSport revealed in the summer how initial talks were held with a view to extending his stay while TREBLING his wages.

They have so far been on ice while United concluded new deals for Chris Smalling, Tom Cleverley and Javier Hernandez.

But United now hope to finalise the new contract for the England striker. It will include incremental rises that could ultimately reach £65,000 a week if he hits appearance and goal targets.

Welbeck is likely to sit out tonight's home Champions League clash with Benfica as Alex Ferguson seeks the win needed to top the group and avoid the big guns in the knockout stages.

Boss Ferguson said: "That is probably the bonus out of it — you hope you do finish top.

"First of all there are certain teams there and that is one issue but the most important one is that second game is at Old Trafford and that is always an advantage."
