Terry: Why AVB must take some credit if we win a trophy

I have a say

John Terry has revealed he is still in touch with Andre Villas-Boas and insisted that the sacked Portuguese manager should take some of the credit if Chelsea go on to win a trophy this season.

Captain Terry is confident that, despite the chaos of the season and the long periods of poor form, the season could still 'go down as one of the best in Chelsea's history'.

The club's dramatic comeback win over Napoli on Wednesday kept them in the Champions League and they face Leicester on Sunday in the FA Cup quarter-finals.

Although the breakdown in relations with senior players was one of the reasons why Villas-Boas failed, Terry says that they should not forget what he was trying to change.

Terry was not among those who fell out with the former manager and was consistently backed by Villas-Boas over the Anton Ferdinand race row.

He said: 'I'm still in contact with him, like a lot of players here, and probably will remain that way. He won't be forgotten. It's disappointing because we would have loved things to go on.

'He had a vision and a plan and, unfortunately, that gets cut short with disappointing performances from us really, so it has a knock-on effect on him. At the end of the day, we're the ones out there performing and we weren't performing as well as we could do. We've shown what we can do, against Napoli, but still at the same time, we don't forget what he's done.'

Terry, though, is insistent that the widespread assumption that senior players have excessive influence at the club is false.
