Will Manchester United Sign Nicholas Gaitan During the Upcoming Transfer Window? Fan’s View

I have a say

Manchester United still has two games left in the 2011-2012 season, but that's not stopping transfer news from making the news. On Friday, May 4, Sky Sports reported that Benfica midfielder Nicolas Gaitan is interested in moving to Old Trafford.

For those who don't remember Gaitan, he's one of the playmakers who gave the Red Devils problems in the group stage of this year's Champions League. He'd be a solid addition to a midfield that is in desperate need of a playmaker. The current group of midfielders has struggled this season, as was evident when Manchester City abused them last Monday in the derby that may have decided this season's Premier League Champion.

I think it's clear that he's an explosive player who would improve the midfield from the moment he put on a Red Devils jersey. At age 24, he's young enough to become a starter at Manchester United for the next decade. I believe he's a must-sign player and that manager Sir Alex Ferguson would be foolish to allow Gaitan to get picked up by a rival. However, it might be out of Ferguson's hands to make a bid for the talented midfielder.

While Ferguson and Gaitan are both showing interest in a move, no one knows if the current club owners, the Glazer family, will release the funds needed to sign him this summer. The Red Devils made some solid moves in last summer's transfer market that made the club younger and more athletic, but those additions weren't cheap.

The Glazers still have the club buried in debt, which has presumably hurt the team's ability to sign star players over the last couple of years. I would think they'd be willing spend some cash on Gaitan, especially with Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes pushing 40, I'm just not sure how much money the Glazers will make available to Ferguson.

Manchester United has some decisions to make this summer. It would be much easier for both the fans and the club if the Glazers hadn't buried the team in debt. I'd prefer to be thinking about what moves Ferguson will make to build for the future. Hopefully, the club makes some money available to sign Gaitan. I think he'd fit in well at Old Trafford.
