Bayern play down Guardiola rumours

Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge kept mum on links with brining Pep Guardiola to the club but assured that Jupp Heynckes will be in charge until Christmas.

Heynckes's future at the Bavarian club has been put into doubt after completing a treble of second-placed finishes last season, but the club has chosen to stick with him for the new season.

Rummenigge allayed fears that over Heyncke's fate in the near future, assuring that he will stay at the helm of the club until next year.

He said at Matthias Sammer's first press conference as the new Bayern sporting director: "We will think about it calmly. You will get no quotes from us about this issue before Christmas.

"Only then will we sit down and talk."

Former Barcelona coach Guardiola is currently one of the hottest properties in the managerial market having left the Catalan club at the end of last season for a 'sabbatical' from football.

Rumours have linked Guardiola to an early return to management, but Rummenigge refused to comment on the case.

He added: "Pep Guardiola? I have also read about this, but no one from Bayern has confirmed this."

Sammer then commented on Bayern's reported interest in Spain international Javi Martinez, who has been valued at €40 million by Athletic Bilbao.

"Basically, the player is good, but he is expensive," he said. "One can always do some crazy signings, but nothing unreasonable.

"I know him well. Our club officials who saw him think that he is very good. Let's wait and see."
