Manchester United’s move to sign Robin van Persie is hanging in the balance because Arsenal  are refusing to budge on their £30 million valuation of the Dutch striker.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger’s determination to extract the maximum fee for the player could re-open the door for champions Manchester City to push their interest in the player.

Wenger said: ‘Van Persie is one of the best strikers in the world, if not the best, and my desire is to keep him at the club. I will do what is in the best interests of Arsenal Football Club.’

In demand: Robin van Persie has stated his desire to leave Arsenal - but the club are holding out for £30m

United had been confident they would eventually sign the striker, who they believe is keen on a move to Old Trafford, with a compromise deal of £20m likely. But Arsenal’s stance has stalled negotiations, leaving City the most likely destination, with Juventus  also put off by the London club’s demands.

City want to sell either Edin Dzeko or Carlos Tevez before committing to a big deal for Van Persie. But they will need to act swiftly to take advantage of Arsenal’s impasse with United and mollify manager Roberto Mancini.

Mancini is understood to be incensed that City have not done more than join United and Juventus in making a modest opening offer for the Dutchman. He wanted a clear signal from club to player that City value Van Persie more highly than their rivals and will do anything to secure his services.
