Becks gives ’em Hope

THUMBS UP ... David Beckham at Wembley on Sunday
STUART PEARCE did not want David Beckham in Team GB but the women’s squad went bonkers after meeting him on Sunday night.
Boss Hope Powell revealed Britain’s girls, who face mighty Brazil at Wembley tonight, spent ages in front of the mirror to look their best for Becks — as well as Prince William, of course.
Former England skipper Beckham and Wills both met the Women’s GB team at Wembley in the wake of the men’s 3-1 win over United Arab Emirates.
Powell said: “It was fantastic. David had sent me a few emails beforehand, which I passed on to the girls. I am not sure they believed me.
“On Sunday I told them he was going to try to see them in the village. They went crazy but I was just joking. But then to actually meet him, well they were absolutely made up.
“They combed their hair about a thousand times and put lipstick on!
“Prince William came over and took pictures and congratulated them and said he hoped they did well in the next game.
“Those are one-off moments that you will treasure for ever. It has been great.
“David has been so supportive, as has Kelly Holmes and many others.”
Women’s football is the third most popular team sport in the land with 1.3million registered players.
But crowds in England women’s matches are nowhere near the 70,000 expected at Wembley tonight.
And Powell insisted an all-British team should continue in future Olympics and not be a one-off just because of the London Games.
Powell, whose team are already in the quarter-finals, added: “If you are going to win a medal in football it has to be in tournaments.
“This gives us an opportunity and the experience — and just to play on the biggest stage for women’s football, what a stage to do that on.
“I know there have been issues around why we haven’t been it in it before and politics which I am not involved in.
“But if the chance presented itself again, I’d absolutely give it the thumbs up.”
