Andre Villas-Boas has admitted he was planning for life without Luka Modric but warned the rebel midfielder he will not be allowed to leave on the cheap.
Real Madrid are still some distance from Tottenham’s £40million valuation of Modric, who has made it clear he wants out of White Hart Lane.
The Croatia midfielder has yet to appear in pre-season and Spurs played their fifth friendly of the summer on Sunday, winning 1-0 at Watford in Lloyd Doyley's testimonial.

Jermain Defoe scored the only goal and Villas-Boas explained that Modric is still training apart from the first-team squad and is lagging behind in his fitness work.
The Tottenham manager also confirmed that the Spanish champions had yet to make an acceptable offer – the opening bid is thought to be below £30m - and that he did not want Real midfielder Nuri Sahin in part exchange.
'We have to move on preparing the squad thinking that the offer might arrive,' said Villas-Boas. 'We respect the mental state of the player and don’t want to affect the running of the squad. That is the most important thing.
