Wayne Rooney made his return to Manchester United on pre-season duty as captain Nemanja Vidic started his first game since last December.
But United failed to find the net in a tough match against Norwegian opposition Valarenga as manager Sir Alex Ferguson stayed behind in Manchester to push the club's drive for wantaway Arsenal captain Robin van Persie.
Patrice Evra had to return to Manchester hours before the game after his wife was rushed into labour but Vidic started alongside regular central defensive partner Rio Ferdinand.
