Low: Dortmund can challenge for Bundesliga

The Germany coach believes BVB will offer much tougher resistance as they aim to wrestle the title back from Bayern Munich in the upcoming season

Joachim Low believes Borussia Dortmund will be more competitive in next season's Bundesliga as they have the ability to "annoy" rivals Bayern Munich.

The Schwarzgelben finished 25 points behind the Bavarians last year and despite losing Mario Gotze to Bayern they have strengthened with the acquisition of Werder Bremen defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos; and attacking duo Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Shakhtar Donetsk and Saint-Etienne, respectively.

And the Germany coach thinks they will provide a much sterner test during the 2013-14 campaign.

“Of course, Bayern go into the new season as the favourite, but I always trust that BVB can annoy FCB," Low told a Bundesliga special issue of Sport 1.

The 53-year-old also spoke about the state of German football, specifically the Bundesliga becoming Europe’s top league, but he had words of caution.

"From a change of power, I can only say the league has solidified its standing in the last three or four years," he added.

"The Bundesliga is still number three behind the Primera Division and the Premier League, those are the bare facts.

“A changing of the guard will only happen if we are number one, namely, for a longer period of time.”

The national team coach is fully aware of the hard work which lies ahead for his side before the World Cup in Brazil next year and he refused to be drawn on any predictions about his team's chances of lifting the trophy.

"No one can guarantee to be the world champions no nation is that presumptuous. For us only the title matters. Look at Spain, which has won the last three major tournaments in a row, you will not hear anything from them.”
