Gasperini out to silence doubters

Genoa will attempt to silence their critics on Saturday when they host Cagliari at the Luigi Ferraris Stadium.

The Grifoni have endured a nightmare spell having lost their past three league games and won just one of their past seven matches.

Defeats to Hellas Verona, AC Milan and Torino have seen Genoa drop to 13th place with 39 points from 33 games.

Genoa coach Gian Piero Gasperini was left fuming after his team conceded two late goals to hand Torino a 2-1 victory last weekend.

"Games only finish after the final whistle," Gasperini said. "We incredibly threw away three points that we deserved.

"But this is football and two fantastic goals from Torino turned the result around."

Gasperini's side looked to be heading for a win after Alberto Gilardino had put them ahead five minutes from the end, but stoppage-time goals from Torino's Ciro Immobile and Alessio Cerci stunned Genoa.

"It was going to be a fantastic days for us before everything changed with only several minutes left to play," Gasperini said.

"We must put this painful loss behind us and focus on our next game."

Cagliari travel to Liguria looking to take another step towards defending their Serie A status.

The Sardinian outfit held Sassuolo to a 1-1 result last Saturday in what was Ivo Pulga's first game in charge since returning to the helm of Cagliari.

The outcome lifted Cagliari to 15th place, eight points clear of the relegation zone.

"This was an important point," Pulga said. "It wasn't an easy game but I thought my players gave their all to overcome this difficult spell.

"We have five games remaining and I think the 35-36-point mark will be sufficient to avoid the drop."

Cagliari have 33 points so far and have won just two games in 2014.

The Sardinians have yet to win on the road this season.
