ON LOUIS' RADAR: Barcelona star Cesc Fabregas is a transfer target for new Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal

The new United manager wants to build his midfielder around the Barcelona star after ditching the club's plan to land German Toni Kroos.

Chief executive Ed Woodward has spent the last six months working on a £30m deal to lure Bayern Munich midfielder Kroos to Old Trafford.

Talks were believed to be at an advanced stage after former boss David Moyes had earmarked him as one of his main summer signings.

But Van Gaal has told Woodward he is not interested in Kroos after replacing Moyes, who was sacked last month.

Van Gaal also wants Holland internationals Kevin Strootman and Arjen Robben instead.

United were left humiliated last summer after failing to sign Spaniard Fabregas.

But he has struggled to secure a regular starting place in the Barca team and is understood to be keen on joining United now Van Gaal has taken charge.

Arsenal are also keen on resigning him.

I DON'T WANT TONY: Van Gaal has told United executive-vice chairman Ed Woodward that he doesn't want to sign Bayern Munich midfielder Tony Kroos

Kroos said: "I am expecting to play for Bayern Munich next season. There was a lot of speculation, but Manchester is and was not an issue.

"At this point in time I am fully focused on preparations for the World Cup."

Dutch star Nigel De Jong has backed current national boss Van Gaal to be a huge success at United, but warned the fallen giants not to expect miracles straight away.

Former Manchester City midfielder De Jong said: "I think he will do well. The Premier League is not easy and it's a big club, but I think he will do well because he has the experience at big clubs over the years.

HE'LL WHIP THEM INTO SHAPE: Former Manchester City midfielder Nigel de Jong thinks Van Gaal is the right man to take United forward

"United need a manager who stands above the group and he's that kind of coach. He's very strict, he demands the best, but he can gel a team very well.

"He is a general, a kind of schoolteacher who tries to teach you a lot of things about how the game is going to be played.

"With the young players he can mould them into great footballers because he has so much experience.

"The training sessions are always good with Holland, the exercises are always good with a high intensity.

"With Van Gaal and United they have to rebuild the team because we saw what happened this year to them. It takes time to get success, though, and you can't expect miracles immediately with Van Gaal there."
