Manchester United willing to pay €60m release clause for Spanish midfielder

Manchester United are willing to pay the €60m release clause for Atletico Madrid’s Koke, according to the Metro.

The 22-year-old is one of the most sought after midfielders this summer after he completed a stunning season with Atletico and United are not the only club credited with a strong interest in him.

This week, Koke‘s name has been all over the back pages in Spain because he has been named as Barcelona’s primary midfield target this summer.

A poll on Sport’s website show an overwhelming 85% of fans are in favour of Barcelona signing Koke while the likes of Sport, Mundo Deportivo and Fichajes have all reported Barcelona’s strong interest in the 22-year-old.

However, Koke has made it very clear he has no intention of asking to leave Atletico.

"I feel very happy. Atletico is my home, I grew up as a child in this club and I’m comfortable," he said.

"I have long-term contract, it is a pride that major clubs come for me but I am happy at Atletico."

Of course, as Koke has a release clause, any club who is willing to pay €60m to Atletico are free to negotiate a deal with him. That does not guarantee that Koke will accept terms and leave Atletico but it would at least cut out the politics of a negotiation process with the club, something which would certainly benefit United.

Even back in January, Koke was already one of the most promising midfielders in Europe and after Atletico’s fantastic end to the season, his stock has risen even more.

Although €60m is a lot of money, it is all relative in modern football and he’d be worth every penny if United did make a move for him.
