Elche 0 : 2 Sevilla - Sevilla move up to second

Second half goals from Carlos Bacca and Kevin Gameiro saw Sevilla take all three points from a testing trip to Elche to go second in the Primera Division.

Unai Emery's men managed just three shots on target all game against a determined Elche side but took the lead just before the hour mark, Bacca knocking a rebound over the line following a well-struck free-kick from Gerard Deulofeu.

Substitute Gameiro then put the game out of the hosts' reach by nodding in a cross from Denis Suarez with 17 minutes to go.

The Andalusians capitalised on Valencia's shock defeat to move into second place, three points behind leaders Barcelona, while Elche drop into the relegation zone and are still looking for their first home win.

Sevilla had put four past Deportivo in their last league game but were more evenly matched by Elche, who controlled possession in the first half and had their opponents under pressure for large spells, although they were unable to hit the target before the break.

Despite having little of the ball, Sevilla made two incursions into the opposing area before the break. Aleix Vidal was put clean through against Manu Herrera but tried to play in Bacca rather than round the goalkeeper and the ball was expertly cut out by Alvaro Gimenez, who raced back to boot the ball into the stands.

A few minutes later Vidal went for goal after being played in by Bacca, but his shot lacked the power to beat Herrera.

A tight game was unlocked by a combination of clever footwork and a powerful shot from Deulofeu. The Barcelona loanee won a free-kick on the right hand side of the area and then blasted the ball towards goalkeeper Manu Herrera, who could only palm it out towards the outstretched leg of Bacca.

The goalkeeper dived back to prevent the ball hitting the net but could stop it from going over the line. There was little doubt the ball had crossed the line, although Bacca appeared to be in an offside position when the free-kick was taken.

Elche were unable to respond with any clear cut chances, the best falling to Cristian Herrera, who was unable to control a teasing cross from Garry Rodrigues.

Fran Escriba's side were still in the game but were soon dealt a sucker punch.

A long kick up field from Beto lead to Denis Suarez finding plenty of space down the left-wing, allowing the former Manchester City player to pick out Gameiro and plant the ball on the Frenchman's head. Gameiro, returning from a knee injury, took full advantage of the opportunity, scoring his first goal of the season as well as sealing the points for his side, who continue to go from strength to strength.
