Cagliari vs AC Milan preview - Torres keen to make his mark

Fernando Torres is set to start for AC Milan at Cagliari on Wednesday looking to return to the form that made him one of Spain's best strikers.

The 30-year-old hopes strong performances for the Rossoneri will open the door for him to play for Spain again.

The former Atletico Madrid star joined Milan on a two-year loan deal from Chelsea this summer and has scored one goal in six league appearances for the San Siro outfit so far.

"I came here to Milan to leave a mark," Torres said to Spanish radio station Onda Cero. "I'm happy with what I've achieved in Spain and in England.

"I would like to do well in Italy.

"The most important thing is that Milan does well and I hope that by doing well with Milan I can return to play for the national team."

AC Milan finished a disappointing eighth in Serie A last season to miss out on European football for the first time in 20 years.

Under new coach Filippo Inzaghi, the Rossoneri have enjoyed a solid start to the campaign, losing just one of their opening eight league matches.

The Rossoneri travel to Sardinia on the back of Sunday's 1-1 draw against Fiorentina at the San Siro.

The outcome extended their unbeaten run to five games and lifted Milan to sixth place, seven points adrift of league leaders Juventus.

"We want to qualify for Europe this season," Torres said. "We point high but we must keep our feet on the ground.

"We have a young team with a young and ambitious coach.

"Inzaghi's coaching appointment generated a lot of enthusiasm and more so after our good start to the season."

Milan, whose only absentee will be injured midfielder Riccardo Montolivo, are unbeaten on the road this season and take on a Cagliari side that have mustered just one point out of a possible nine at home.

The hosts, nevertheless, head into the encounter at the Sant' Elia stadium in buoyant mood.

The Sardinian outfit won 4-0 at Empoli last time out to clinch their second win.

The result in Tuscany, which saw Cagliari keep a clean sheet for the first time this season, lifted the islanders to 12th position.

"Our big win at Empoli has given us a big boost in confidence," Cagliari playmaker Andrea Cossu said. "Now we face Milan and we really want to win at home in order to give our fans some joy."
