Atalanta vs Cagliari preview - Zola wants revival to continue

Cagliari coach Gianfranco Zola has urged his side to maintain their improved form as they prepare to face Atalanta in Bergamo on Sunday.

The Sardinian outfit have collected seven points of a possible nine in their last three games to pull away from the relegation zone.

Last weekend's 2-1 triumph over Sassuolo lifted Cagliari to 17th position, one place and one point clear of the drop zone.

"We are doing well and we showed great character against Sassuolo," Zola told the Italian press. "I am pleased with how my players are performing.

"We are improving game by game and this is a good sign.

"We have to keep working hard because this team can still improve.

"Our strikers are doing a very good job and we must continue like this."

Cagliari had mustered just one goal in five league games prior to beating Cesena 2-1 on January 11.

They followed that result with a 2-2 draw at Udinese before last weekend's success over Sassuolo.

Atalanta go into the encounter at the Atleti Azzurri d'Italia stadium on the back of last weekend's 1-0 defeat at Hellas Verona that halted their four-match Serie A unbeaten run.

"We took a step back with respect to the performance that saw us win at AC Milan in the previous round," Atalanta coach Stefano Colantuono said. "In any case, we cannot make a drama of this.

"We need to work hard and focus on taking three points against Cagliari."

Atalanta are 15th in the standings but just one point clear of Sunday's rivals.

The Bergamaschi, unbeaten at home since losing to Roma on November 22, will be without midfielder Daniele Baselli, who serves a one-match ban.

The visitors will not be at full strength with defender Luca Rossettini and midfielder Albin Ekdal suspended, while midfielder Andrea Cossu and striker Victor Ibarbo are injured.
