Second half goals from Tom De Sutter and Lior Refaelov saw Club Brugge come from behind to beat Besiktas 2-1 in the UEFA Europa League round of 16 first-leg tie at Jan Breydel Stadium.

Gokhan Tore fired Turkey's Besiktas ahead in the 46th minute after a cautious first half but De Sutter levelled in the 62nd minute with Refaelov on target from the penalty spot.

The hosts showed a brief glimpse of attacking intent early in the clash when De Sutter was flagged offside after a break in the 18th minute but that was about as exciting as it got in the first half, with both sides preferring to play the waiting game.

The best chance of the half fell to Club Brugge defender Davy De Fauw as a ball dropped at his feet in the area, but he scuffed his shot and made it an easy save for Besiktas goalkeeper Cenk Gonen.

Things changed after the break, though, when Tore put the visitors ahead in the first minute of the second half.

Tore skipped past two defenders and into the area before firing a shot in at the near post, his fourth goal of the Turkish side's European campaign.

Timmy Simons blazed a strike over from 25 yards at the other end shortly after as the hosts started to chase the game before Besiktas striker Demba Ba had a strike blocked by Oscar Duarte in the 59th minute before sending another effort over the bar.

The host did get back on level terms just after the hour mark thanks to De Sutter, who directed Felipe Gedoz's 25-yard strike past Gonen at full stretch.

They were boosted by the goal and went close again in the 75th minute when Laurens De Bock's curling free-kick from 20 yards out swung around the Besiktas wall before being saved by a diving Gonen.

However, the Belgian side did take the lead for the first time in the match thanks to Refaelov's 78th minute penalty, after Serdar Kurtulus brought down Gedoz in the area.

Refaelov placed his shot to Gonen's left, and while the keeper guessed the right way, he could not get across in time to save the spot-kick.

It just left Club Brugge with 10 minutes to see out Besiktas' threat - and they almost scored a third through a looping Refaelov header from a 90th minute corner.
