Genoa 2 : 0 Cagliari - Luckless Cagliari lose again

Genoa left Cagliari even deeper in relegation danger with a 2-0 win at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris on Saturday.

Goals from M'Baye Niang and Iago Falque earned the Rossoblu all three points against a luckless Cagliari side, who hit the woodwork three times.

The win keeps Genoa in with an outside chance of making Europe next season, although Cagliari's hopes of staying up took a blow with five points separating them from Atalanta above the relegation zone, and the Bergamo club have a game in hand.

Cagliari went close to taking an early lead through Luca Rossettini, whose header hit the post, and then Luca Ceppitelli, who turned the rebound against the post once again.

The Sardinians hit the woodwork once again in the 21st minute with Paul-Jose M'Poku's shot from the edge of the area striking the crossbar.

It was then Genoa's turn to come close to opening the scoring with Falque twice and Giovanni Marchese missing the target before the former was denied by Zeljko Brkic.

The chances continued to come thick and fast at both ends in the second half and it was not long before the deadlock was finally broken with Niang putting the hosts in front in the 52nd minute, netting from close range from Facundo Roncaglia's cross.

Just five more minutes passed before Genoa had their second goal with Falque this time beating Brkic with a precise shot into the corner.

Cagliari refused to wave the white flag, though, and true to the philosophy of their coach Zdenek Zeman, they continued to attack in search of a route back into the game.

Joao Pedro twice tested Eugenio Lamanna in the Genoa goal before the home team struck the post through Niang.

The game was still wide open, though, with Cagliari continuing to attack with Samuele Longo going close to his first goal in Serie A, Lamanna denying him that pleasure.

Despite all of their repeated efforts, Cagliari could not find a way through as their plight worsened following defeat in Liguria.
