Lazio vs Inter Milan preview - Pioli predicts strong finish

Lazio coach Stefano Pioli remains upbeat about the Serie A run-in heading into Sunday's home meeting with Inter Milan despite last weekend's costly draw at Atalanta.

The 1-1 result in Bergamo, coupled with Roma's 2-0 triumph over Genoa, dropped Lazio to third in the table, one point adrift of their city rivals with four games remaining.

The top two teams qualify directly for Europe's elite club competition next season.

Lazio have won just one of their last four league games and hold the last Champions League qualifying spot.

"We played against a very physical team and we did well to clinch a point against Atalanta," Pioli told Gazzetta dello Sport. "I consider it an important point.

"We weren't as sharp as we could have been but my team showed character and determination.

"As (Roma coach) Rudi Garcia rightly said a few weeks ago, it's not important who is second now but who finishes second."

The good news for Pioli is that defender Stefan de Vrij and midfielder Lucas Biglia have recovered from their respective injuries and should start against Inter.

The Nerazzurri, coached by former Lazio tactician Roberto Mancini, are in the midst of a six-match unbeaten run.

Inter were held to a goalless draw by Chievo in the last round.

They are eighth in the standings, two points adrift of Sampdoria, who are sixth and hold the last Europa League qualifying spot.

"There are still 12 points up for grabs and we can qualify for Europe," said Inter midfielder Hernanes. "We will try to win our next four games, starting on Sunday."

The match in Rome will be special for Hernanes.

The Brazilian midfielder spent four seasons at Lazio before joining Inter in January 2014.

"I have beautiful memories of my time at Lazio," Hernanes said. "I know I will get emotional as soon as I see the Stadio Olimpico.

"Lazio have had a good season and I think they will qualify for the Champions League."
