Cesena vs Cagliari preview - Di Carlo focused on end of season

Cesena will host their last Serie A match for at least a year when Cagliari come to town this weekend.

Sunday's date with Cagliari is Cesena's last home match of the campaign.

With two rounds of games remaining, Cesena, like Cagliari, are already destined for Serie B football next season.

Domenico Di Carlo's side will return to the second tier just 12 months after gaining promotion to Italy's top flight.

Monday's defeat at Napoli, Cesena's 20th loss of the campaign, left the Emilia-Romagna club in 19th place, 12 points adrift of safety.

"My aim was to save Cesena from relegation and build a long-term project here," Di Carlo said to the Italian press. "But we came up short.

"In any event, this group has always remained united and this is a good point of reference to build on from next season.

"We now have to think of our last two games and only then will I sit down with the club executives to discuss my future."

Cesena have mustered just four wins, losing 19 of their 37 games.

"We will try to end the campaign in the best possible way," Di Carlo said. "I hope we can play well on Sunday and give our fans some joy."

Cagliari lost 1-0 at home to Palermo in the last round to suffer relegation and have their 11-year run in Serie A come to a painful end.

The Sardinian outfit have collected just six wins all season and are one place and four points above Cesena.

"I'm saddened for our fans," Cagliari coach Gianluca Festa said. "It's not nice to be relegated and it takes a lot of hard work to return to Serie A.

"I know it because as a player I had to go through that.

"But in sport you need to accept defeat and bounce back.

"We need to find the strength to return to the top flight as soon as possible."

Festa replaced Zdenek Zeman at the helm of Cagliari in April and is under contract with the Sardinian club until the end of the season.

"I am a Cagliari fan," the former Middlesbrough and Cagliari player said." It would be an honour and a privilege to continue to coach the Rossoblu next season."
