MANCHESTER UNITED yesterday agreed a deal to sign Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger as they embarked on a MAJOR spending spree.

The Stretford End club’s next big target is Valencia centre-back Nicolas Otamendi.

Schweinsteiger will become the first German to play for United’s first team.

The clubs refused to reveal the fee – but Bayern had been holding out for around £15million for Schweinsteiger, 30, although a lower figure may have been agreed.

It’s believed the Old Trafford giants have offered a three-year contract to the Bayern legend worth £21.6 million.

United said the deal was subject to a medical and Schweinsteiger accepting their terms.

But the transfer is expected to be completed this week with the World Cup-winning star, who had a year left on his contract, telling Bayern he wanted a new challenge – at United.

Meanwhile, super-agent Jorge Mendes has been brought in to broker a move to United for Otamendi, 27.

But the influential Mendes will also sound out Manchester City and Chelsea.

City have a long-standing interest in the £25 million-rated Argentina defender.

Otamendi’s agent, Eugenio Lopez, has recruited Mendes to help set up a deal - with Old Trafford the most-likely destination.

Mendes has already taken Otamendi’s Argentina team-mates Angel Di Maria and Marcos Rojo to United.

But he was also behind City signing centre Eliaquim Mangala and midfielder Fernando.

United are also signing Torino and Italy right back Matteo Darmian, 25, for £13 million.

And having already paid £25 million for Memphis Depay from PSV Eindhoven, they could spend another £125 million.
