BASTIAN SCHWEINSTEIGER will pocket a staggering £13m-a-season at Manchester United to become the highest-paid midfielder in the Premier League.

The German superstar has stunned football by quitting Bayern Munich to join United in a £10m deal.

But Starsport can reveal the midfield ace has agreed a three-year deal worth £275,000-a-week that will cost United almost £40m in wages.

The deal sees him leapfrog Manchester City rival Yaya Toure as the most expensive midfielder in English football history.

United boss Louis van Gaal made Schweinsteiger his main summer target, as exclusively revealed by Starsport in May, and told Old Trafford chiefs to break the bank to land him.

Chief executive Ed Woodard has kept his side of the bargain and Schweinsteiger completed his move yesterday after passing a medical before joining his new team-mates to jet off on their pre-season tour of America.

United also completed the £25m signing of France international Morgan Schneiderlin from Southampton as Van Gaal took his summer spending spree past £80m.

Schneiderlin has agreed a four-year deal that will keep him at Old Trafford until 2019, but it is the capture of Schweinsteiger that has hit the headlines.

The 30-year-old has won every major honour in the game and inspired the Germans to World Cup glory in Brazil last summer.

It is understood Bayern bosses only agreed to sell him after he told them he wanted to leave following talks in London with United earlier this year.

He admits United were the only club he would have left the German champions for and Schweinsteiger, who played under Van Gaal at the Allianz Arena, said: "I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Bayern Munich. It has been an incredible journey and I didn't take the decision to leave lightly.

"Manchester United is the only club that I would have left Munich for.

"I feel ready for this new and exciting challenge in what I regard as the most competitive league in the world and I am looking forward to working with Louis van Gaal again."

Speculation was mounting last night that David De Gea will snub a move to Real Madrid and see out the final 12 months of his contract at United instead.

Real president Florentino Perez has been desperate to sign the Spanish keeper but is refusing to meet United's £35m asking price and with talks having hit a brick wall, De Gea could now stay and leave Old Trafford on a free next summer.

Real's case was not helped by the player United wanted to take in return, Sergio Ramos, being named Real skipper yesterday.

Victor Valdes did not travel with Van Gaal's squad to Seattle, fuelling speculation that the ex-Barcelona star will be sold after refusing to act as back-up to his fellow Spanish keeper.

Keeping De Gea would be another huge boost for Van Gaal, who is now focused on trying to sign a world class striker to complete his squad, with Thomas Muller, Edinson Cavani and Harry Kane on his shopping list.
