Colchester ended a run of three straight defeats with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Port Vale.
Colin Daniel was foiled by Colchester goalkeeper Jamie Jones in the opening stages while at the other end, Tom Eastman's effort was cleared off the line by Anthony Grant.
Vale defender Carl Dickinson's attempted clearance came back off his crossbar before Colchester took a 25th-minute lead through George Elokobi, who finished emphatically after Darren Ambrose's corner had not been cleared.
Jones made a superb save to deny Daniel and also foiled Sam Foley, before Port Vale equalised just before half-time when Daniel rose to head home substitute Ryan Lloyd's precise cross.
Tosin Olufemi curled a shot just wide for Colchester before the hosts regained their lead with 17 minutes remaining through Marvin Sordell, who finished clinically after George Moncur had progressed in the area.
Vale keeper Jak Alnwick denied Sordell a second after he had been sent through on goal by Callum Harriott who hit a post late on, as Colchester edged it.
