The Blues boss is safe for now, despite his side slumping to a humiliating 1-0 defeat at home to Bournemouth on Saturday.

But Roman Abramovich was alarmed to hear fans boo his team off during that match, and the billionaire owner will review the situation once Chelsea's European fate is decided.

Mourinho is still being consulted on January transfer targets, in the belief he is still the best man to turn things around.

But defeat to Porto and an early Champions League exit could make them think again with the club now 14 points off a top four place.

One of the main reasons for Abramovich sticking with Mourinho has been the continuing support the Special One has among Blues fans. But if that were to change, then all bets are off.

Mourinho took training yesterday and knows he needs to lift his shell-shocked players for one of the biggest games of his career.

And despite the Blues boss admitting he has no right to ask for reinforcements in the transfer market, Abramovich has decided he needs to spend next month.

Chelsea's problem is that their top targets - Paul Pogba, John Stones and Antoine Griezmann - all look out of reach in January.

Shakhtar Donetsk are also playing hardball over Alex Teixeira, who has admitted he wants to join the Blues. But Chelsea believe a bid of £30m would be enough to land him.

A move for West Brom misfit Saido Berahino has also been discussed. But it's understood Chelsea are not currently planning to bid for Harry Kane or Jamie Vardy.

John Terry is expected to return from an ankle injury against Porto, a match which Mourinho described as "a knockout game".

He said: "It's a group phase game where normally you play for points. But the reality is that it's a knockout. Big game."

Midfielder Nemanja Matic said: "We are in a difficult moment and it is going to be hard to come back from this, but we have to try to resolve this situation and work hard and recover the situation."
