Monaco 1 - 0 Saint-Etienne: Fabinho penalty earns high-flying Monaco victory over St Etienne

Monaco extended their recent run of good form with a slender 1-0 win over 10-man St Etienne at the Stade Louis II.

Fabinho's late penalty came after Les Verts had Kevin Malcuit sent off for a second yellow card in a result that left Monaco with just one Ligue 1 defeat in their previous 12 games.

Leonardo Jardim's side went close on 18 minutes when Nabil Dirar's cross found Helder Costa but the Benfica loanee's effort found Stephane Ruffier's crossbar.

The hosts continued to create the better chances in the opening half and only a smart save from Ruffier denied Joao Moutinho with a stinging effort from distance just before the break.

Monaco picked up where they left off after the restart but both Thomas Lemar and Jeremy Toulalan failed to find the target with efforts inside the opening five minutes.

What was proving to be an uncomfortable afternoon for St Etienne became more difficult when Malcuit was shown his second yellow for clumsy challenge on Moutinho with 63 minutes on the clock.

As expected, the one-way traffic continued and, with just 10 minutes left to play, Monaco got their reward when Pierre-Yves Polomat inexplicably handled inside the area.

Fabinho took responsibility for the resulting spot-kick and dispatched an effort beyond the outstretched Ruffier from 12 yards to hand the hosts all three points.
