Liverpool midfielder Kevin Stewart has agreed a new four-year contract after breaking into the first team under manager Jurgen Klopp this season.

The 22-year-old defensive midfielder, who can also be deployed at full-back, is currently on the treatment table after suffering ankle ligament damage last week.

However, he has been rewarded for his progress this season, having featured in four FA Cup fixtures as well as the 6-0 mauling of Aston Villa on 14 February.

Commenting on his new deal, the former Tottenham trainee told Liverpoolfc.com: "It gives me more confidence, it shows [the club] believes in me and believe that I could go on to become a good player for them.

"It has just given me confidence in myself and the security [I have] time to prove myself and get better with good coaches and good players."

Reflecting on his appearances in the FA Cup and making his first-team debut in the Premier League, he added: "It took me until the age of 22 to make my debut and all those years I was just wondering what it'd be like, how difficult it would be, and if I'd cope playing in front of so many fans against Premier League players.

"It's maybe just relaxed my mind a little bit. Okay, I've not played too many [games] but just getting there and playing against [big] teams and in the Premier League has calmed my mind."

Stewart was recalled from his loan spell at Swindon Town in January after recovering from a medial ligament injury, having made five first-team appearances for the League One outfit.
