David De Gea named Man Utd’s Player of the Year for third consecutive season

David De Gea has made club history tonight for Manchester United, as he’s the first player to ever be named as their Player of the Year for a third successive season.

De Gea has had another magnificent season between the sticks for United at Old Trafford, despite enduring a rather bizarre start to the campaign. The 25-year-old shot-stopper looked all-set to complete a move to Real Madrid last summer, so much so that he missed the first four Premier League games to get the deal over the line.

However, due to complications regarding the paperwork, the transfer didn’t happen, as the Spanish window slammed shut. Since coming back into the Red Devils side though, you wouldn’t have guessed that De Gea was earlier pining for a move to the Bernabeu, performing heroics yet again for Louis van Gaal’s troops.

He’s played a huge part in helping the Red Devils to the FA Cup final this season, saving a Romelu Lukaku penalty in the semi-finals, while the team can also thank him for his efforts in keeping them in the race for a top four finish, as we enter the final week or so of the campaign.

The Spaniard has continued to develop at a rapid pace at Old Trafford, establishing himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the world during that time. This term De Gea has kept 14 clean sheets and averaged 2.35 saves-per-game in 31 Premier League appearances, with an average claim success of 96%.

As for United, they sit fifth on 60 points following the 1-1 draw against Leicester City on Sunday, leaving them four adrift of Manchester City in fourth with just three games remaining, although they do have a game in hand on their neighbours.

Next up for Van Gaal’s men is an away clash at Norwich City this weekend, with the Canaries fighting for their top flight lives down in the bottom three.
