FC Bayern München have stolen a march on their competitors with the announcement that Renato Sanches has signed a five-year contract with the Bundesliga champions.
The teenage midfielder will end a two-year association with Benfica during the off-season to start a new chapter in his career at the Allianz Arena.
Manchester United were amongst his reported suitors, but Bayern convinced Sanches that his future lies in Bavaria and have signed him up on a long-term deal worth an initial €35 million.
“Renato Sanches was already scouted by FC Bayern Munich for a longer period of time,” Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said.
“We are delighted to have signed him for our club despite notable international competitors. Renato is a dynamic, ball-winning and technically adept midfielder, who will reinforce our squad.”
Deputy CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen added: “The transfer fee for the national-team player, who last night was named ‘Newcomer of the Year’ in his country, amounts to €35 million, excluding possible add-ons that for instance will be due for payment should the player be called up to the world XI or elected as the FIFA World Footballer of the Year.”
Sanches has scored two goals in 24 appearances for the Aguias this term, helping them to the Primeira Liga summit, where they go into the final round of fixtures on course to defend their title.
