Joao Teixera moves from Porto to Liverpool for just £250,000

Liverpool will receive just £250,000 for Joao Teixeira following his completed transfer to Portuguese giants Porto as his contract was set to expire this summer.

Teixeira rejected a five-year contract extension at Liverpool last week, signalling the end of his time at the club with his current deal running out in June.

The 23-year-old was hoping for much more action in the first team under Jurgen Klopp than he got this season and his move away from the club, having agreed to join Porto, is motivated by the need for regular football.

Liverpool will receive just £250,000 for the deal though, despite Porto being required to pay a compensation fee for his transfer due to the player's age.

According to the Liverpool Echo, instead of it going to a tribunal which would fetch a seven-figure fee, Fifa's rules state that transfers to a club across Europe warrant a 'training fee' of just 300,000 euros.

If Teixeira was joining a club in England, they would be forced to agree upon a fee or it would go to a tribunal, where he would likely cost his new club a fee in the millions, unlike Porto's relatively small figure.

His desire to leave for Porto and return home to Portugal will cost Liverpool a much higher fee.

"I am from the north and to wear blue and white has always been a dream for me," Teixeira said. "Now I can work at my club in my region and my country. I had other offers but do not want anything other than to wear blue and white."

Joao Teixeira made one eight-minute appearance for Liverpool in the Premier League this season, coming on in their 2-0 defeat away to Leicester City in early-2016.
