According to Bleacher Report, Darmian has emerged as a target for Antonio Conte, who wants to sign a versatile full-back ahead of his first season at Stamford Bridge.
The 26-year-old is already playing under the incoming Blues boss for Italy at Euro 2016.
And Conte apparently wants his compatriot to join him in west London when he takes over as Chelsea manager this summer.
United signed Darmian from Torino last summer in a deal worth £12m.
He endured a mixed debut season at Old Trafford, winning the club’s Player of the Month award in August before being replaced by Antonio Valencia in Louis van Gaal’s starting line-up towards the end of the campaign.
And the Italian has already already been linked with a move away from the Red Devils.
The Sun recently claimed new boss Jose Mourinho was prepared to let him leave for Juventus as part of an ambitious bid to sign Paul Pogba.
Chelsea will be hoping to bounce back from a disastrous title defence under Conte next term.
The Blues eventually finished 10th in the Premier League table, a staggering 31 points behind unexpected champions Leicester.
