BATE Borisov 1 - 0 Dundalk - Dundalk suffer narrow loss to BATE Borisov in Belarus

Dundalk's hopes of progressing through the Champions League qualifiers remain after a narrow defeat to BATE Borisov in Belarus.

The hosts dominated the game, hitting the woodwork twice and creating many more chances than their visitors from the Republic of Ireland.

But Stephen Kenny's side are still well in the third qualifying round tie following a 1-0 loss, with substitute Mikhail Gordeichuk the only man able to beat an inspired Gary Rogers in the Dundalk goal.

BATE skipper Vitali Rodionov saw an early effort deflect onto the bar before firing wide soon after, with Robbie Benson offering the best attacking threat for the Irish side in the first half.

The hosts' dominance continued after the interval with Mirko Ivanic, Maksim Zhavnerchik and Aleksei Rios all forcing smart saves out of Rogers inside the opening 10 minutes of the second period.

Dundalk's defence was finally breached by Gordeichuk, who struck on 70 minutes having only just entered the game in place of Ivanic.

There was still time for Igor Stasevich to test Rogers again with Kaspars Dubra's late header cracking against the crossbar - meaning BATE only have a one-goal advantage ahead of next week's second leg at Tallaght Stadium.
