Wins for Macau and Mongolia in Solidarity Cup

Macau booked their place in the semi-finals of the Solidarity Cup with a 4-1 come-from-behind win over Laos at Sarawak Stadium.

Khamphanh Sonthanalay gave Laos the lead after just three minutes but goals from Lao Pak Kin and Leong Ka Hang put Macau in front before a brace by Nicholas Tarrao secured all three points for his side, who picked up their second win in a row.

Speaking after the match, Macau coach Tam Iao San was full of praise for the character his team showed to keep their composure after conceding such an early goal.

“Thanks to the team for their effort and the most important thing was they fought to the end,” said Tam.

“It was very difficult to come for behind. I was hoping the players could focus on defending especially when Laos made some changes in the second half.

“We tried to drop back and use the counter attacks and the players did well, they defended well they organised the counterattacks and I’d like to say thanks to them.

“We already reached our target. Before we came here our target was to get to the semi-finals and we have achieved that and now we will fight game by game.

“For Macau it’s very difficult to organise the players and to have the chance to play international matches, but we want to encourage Macau football especially among the young generation. They can work hard and have a model for the top team, so we want to fight game by game.”

In the later fixture on Sunday, Nyamosor Naranbold’s second-half penalty spot brace earned Mongolia a 2-0 win over Sri Lanka. That result keeps Mongolia’s hopes of a place in the semi-finals alive.

Victorious coach Toshiaki Imai admitted his group were fortunate to be awarded the penalties but commended his players for taking full advantage of the opportunities they were given.

“We had some luck and we got two goals by penalties but I think our players showed the better play I think,” Imai said.
