Old Trafford scouts have been impressed by the Hoffenheim star's performances this season.

And The Sun say that has seen them advise Mourinho to target the Germany international when the transfer window reopens.

The Red Devils gaffer's desire to add to his defensive options has been well-documented, with suggestions Ed Woodward is prepared to bankroll another big-money arrival.

Mourinho is believed to be keen to secure the services of a Champions League-level player to compete with Eric Bailly and Chris Smalling.

However, Manchester United are not the only Premier League side keen on Sule.

ESPN FC this week claimed that Chelsea have prioritised the 21-year-old as they seek to shore up their own backline in the new year.

Antonio Conte splashed out more than ï¿¡50m to recruit defensive duo David Luiz and Marcos Alonso this summer.

But lingering doubts over John Terry's long-term Chelsea future and Gary Cahill's suitability for the Blues boss' 3-4-3 system mean he could swoop for Sule.

The Bundesliga ace is not the only centre-back to have been linked with a move to Manchester United though.

Mourinho is said to be weighing up bids for Southampton's Virgil Van Dijk and Jose Fonte, as well as Benfica's Victor Lindelof.
